If you ask most Cherry Republic employees what their favorite season is, they’ll more than likely tell you that it’s fall. In Northern Michigan, the weather during this time of year is still beautiful, and there’s a nice lull between the crazy days of summer and the jolly-yet-hectic weeks leading up to Christmas.
The only problem is, there isn’t an official holiday throughout the fall season. So with a nod toward our whimsical company value of ‘Beaches’ (as in “Life, Liberty, Beaches & Pie”), which reminds us that work should be done with a light heart, we took it upon ourselves to create our own holiday: Leaf Day. Set for the third Monday in October, not coincidentally the week following Leif Erikson Day, this Republic holiday has been embraced by our employees with gusto. Last year, Katie, the general manager of our southern stores, made the trek up to Northern Michigan to enjoy a fall color tour with Dawn, the general manager of our Traverse City and Charlevoix store, while Nan who works in our corporate department spent her Leaf Day up in Northport at the Christmas Cove Farm. Todd, the CEO of Cherry Republic, spent his day off at the Clay Cliffs Trail, while our Supply Chain Manager Ryan spent his day fishing. This year, Leaf Day falls on Monday, October 21, and this will mark the second year that all Cherry Republic locations — including our HQs, retail stores, Public House, and mail order — will be closed for the day so every employee can enjoy this unique Republic perk. Some may choose to rake leaves, others will play in them, and a few individuals might just sit on a beach and take it all in. That’s the great thing about creating your own holiday; you get to make up the rules!
